Home Remedies: Essential Oils For Hair Growth

People spend millions of dollars every year trying to keep hair from falling out and trying to get it to grow back.

But WYFF News 4's Carol Goldsmith said that some hair remedies might work for less money and smell good, too.

Four essential oils, of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood, have been shown to help hair re-growth.

A Scottish study had people rub the formula into their scalps for seven nights. After that time, 44 percent of the participants showed hair re-growth, compared to just 15 percent who used a non-treatment oil instead.

"A traditional remedy would be putting a few drops of essential oil of rosemary in your shampoo," nutritionist Ron Veitel said.

Hair Oil Recipe
From About.com

3 drops of essential oil of thyme
3 drops of essential oil of lavender
3 drops of essential oil of rosemary
3 drops of essential oil of cedarwood
1/8 cup of grapeseed oil
1/8 cup of jojoba oil

Mix the ingredients together. Cover your pillow with an old towel. Apply several drops of the mixture to areas of hair loss each night, massaging gently into scalp for 3-5 minutes. Store the oil tightly covered. Do not take internally or near the eye area.
